Этот танец был элементом духовной практики. Впрочем, за века, прошедшие со времен расцвета танцев на Конго-сквер, мапука и произошедшие от нее танцы стали все больше восприниматься как в первую очередь сексуальные, и их духовные аспекты оказались задвинуты в тень возмущением против демонстрации сексуальности. В конце XX в. танец был ненадолго запрещен в Кот-д’Ивуар, так как в глубоко верующей стране его сочли непристойным. На него все еще наложены ограничения в Того, Нигерии, Буркина-Фасо и Камеруне.
